BQ34110: How to learning NIMH battery gauge ic

Hi SIr 

At present, there is a new case that needs to use NIMH battery,

we need gauge IC to know the state of battery charge and discharge, we consider designing BQ34110 on the main board.

Q1. Is it feasible to design the IC on the board?

Q2. How to let the gauge IC learn the charge-discharge curve? What is the process?

Is there any EVK that can provide verification?

Hi,

This device is a good choice for NIMH batteries. It uses the CEDV algorithm which generally works better with NIMH. So for question 1, it is feasible to use this gauge with this chemistry. As for question two, you should reference this document. Essentially, you will need to discharge at their expected medium and high rates in three different temperatures, and submit the data to our tools which will give the information needed to program the gauge. 

What exactly do you mean by EVK? We do have EVM's such as this https://www.ti.com/tool/BQ34110EVM-796 that you could use for verification.

So I want to confirm again, I can use this EVK (BQ34110EVM-796) to learn charge and discharge data.

Hi Martin,

You can use the EVM to generate the files used for the GPC tool. Ideally, you would do it in your actual system for the most accurate data, but for CEDV, the difference isn't as big as it is in impedance track so it should be okay. But to reiterate, using the actual system will deliver the best results.
